A village on the Galway - Dublin road, Craughwell was the birthplace of Robert O'Hara Burke (q.v.), who explored central Australia in the nineteenth century, and the graveyard of Killeeneen holds the grave of 'Blind Raftery' (Anthony Raftery), (1784 -1834), poet, harpist and composer of songs.

Nearby is St. Cleran's House, formerly the home of film director John Huston. The kennels of the local hunt, the Galway Blazers, are nearby.
