County Clare - Scariff

Scariff Square Photo: Sandy HicksLocated in east Clare, between Killaloe and Mountshannon, Scariff is a pleasant market town built on a hill. The town square (now a car park) occupies the crest of the hill, so that every road into the town is uphill.

Scariff is considered by some to be the capital of the county and has a population of around 1,500 now (c2001), though the 1996 census gives a figure nearer 800. There is a water tower dating back to the time of the famine, which was recently restored.

The Scariff River is an attraction for anglers, and the river, which flows into the Shannon is navigable for river cruisers almost to the town. There are several walkways and rest-areas along the river-side, for those looking for a pleasant walk.

The main employer is a Spanish forest products company. A conspicuous industry, the wood-processing plant makes its presence known through the smell that sometimes permeates the air of Scariff. Large areas of the Slieve Aughty Hills are now under afforestation.

Scariff has its own market house, located just out of the town on the Feakle road.

Raheen Woods (Steiner) school, an alternative education centre, is located a small distance out of Scariff, in Tuamgreaney.

Scariff is the hometown of the famous novelist Edna O'Brien whose works were once banned in Ireland as being too obscene and irreverent in a Catholic country. You can purchase some of those books through our online bookstore (in association with Amazon.com) ... things are a little more relaxed now!

10th Century church, Tuamgreaney Photo: Sandy Hicks To find out more about the history and local area around Scariff and Tuamgreaney, visit the Heritage Centre, which is situated next to a church dating from the 10th century.

You will find the Centre in Tuamgreaney, out on the Ennis road.

There is a recycling center and transfer station in Scariff (on the Feakle road) accepting all the normal associated waste (glass, drink cans etc) and also oil, white goods, paper and small quantities of scrap metal. For more details about this visit our recycling page here.

In the town you there is also some of the more useful shops/services - a Post Office (in the square), library, dentist, doctor, chemist, an ATM (Bank of Ireland branch), several fuel outlets and Gardai station.
