The sea-side
resort of Limerick in Victorian times, when wealthy merchants families
retired here for the whole summer season, and built the many substantial
summer houses that are now small hotels and guesthouses. Still attracts
large crouds in summer; lifeless, locked up and dreary in winter.
Has a wide horseshoe shaped sandy beach, and when the local pollution
problem gets sorted, will always be a fine safe amenity. To the
south, in the flat rocks, is a number of natural swimming pools,
known as 'Pollock Holes', replenished with fresh sea-water at every
tide, and ideal for children and uncertain swimmers.
A small indoor pool (shallow, noisy and hugely popular with small children) with a basic and reasonably-priced cafe-type eatery has recently been opened, just off the beach. Good car-parking.
Kilkee still has one of the few beach race-meetings that still survive in Ireland; worth seeing for a flavor of the past, it is a one-afternoon meeting in August.
